Why Your Washing Machine Won't Drain: A Montgomery County Homeowner's Guide

You open the washer and find your clothes sitting in water. The cycle finished, but the water didn't go anywhere. Here's what's usually going on — and what to do about it.
Common Reasons a Washer Won't Drain
- Clogged drain pump filter. Most front-load washers have a small access panel with a pump filter that catches coins, lint, hair ties, and sock fragments. When it clogs, water can't exit. Cleaning it takes five minutes and fixes the problem surprisingly often.
- Kinked or clogged drain hose. Check the hose behind the washer — if it's pinched against the wall or clogged with buildup, water backs up into the tub.
- Failed drain pump. If the filter is clean and the hose is clear but you hear humming (or silence) where the pump should be running, the pump motor itself may have failed. This is the most common part replacement for drain issues.
- Lid switch or door lock failure. Top-load washers won't drain or spin if the lid switch thinks the lid is open. Front-loaders have the same logic with the door lock. If the machine stops dead at the drain cycle, this is a prime suspect.
- Control board or timer malfunction. If the washer fills and agitates but never advances to drain, the timer or electronic control may not be sending the signal.
What to Try First
- Bail out standing water with a bucket or towels (don't run more cycles on a full tub).
- Clean the drain pump filter (check your manual for the access panel location).
- Straighten the drain hose and make sure it's not pushed too far down the standpipe.
- Try a drain/spin-only cycle and listen: humming with no draining points to the pump; total silence points to the lid switch or controls.
When to Call for Washer Repair
If the filter and hose are clear and it still won't drain, you're looking at a pump, lid switch, or control issue — all quick diagnoses for an experienced technician, but not great DIY projects (there's water, electricity, and a heavy machine involved).
